Softer Seats for Second Graders

This project was not my typical kind of project, where I stew it around in my brain for a long time trying to perfect it in theory before it ever touches paper or fabric. No, this one was a spontaneous, get-er-done kind of project that popped into my head one minute (after a momentary chat with my son's teacher) and was zipping through my sewing machine just a few hours later, then complete and ready for delivery just a few hours after that.

You see, next week is standardized testing for my son who is in second grade this year. This will be his first time experiencing the week-long testing, and he's one of those kids who doesn't sit still even when he's doing a sitting-still kind of activity. His teacher suggested that he might have an easier time with the testing next week if I sent in a small cushion for his seat, and that she would send a note home to all the parents suggesting the same thing.

I guess I was in the mood to create something useful yesterday, so I popped into my local Joann's with my coupons in hand, picked up what I needed for this project that I designed in my head in about five minutes, ran home and made one sample, brought it to school with me at pick-up time, waited until the teacher was out of the room so I could sneak in and 'try on' the sample, then went home and cut and sewed for a couple hours, turning out fifteen 12 by 12 inch flannel covered seat cushions, one for each of the second graders.

What do you think of this....

School Chair Seat CushionDon't you just love the monkey fabric? Very appropriate for this class of nine boys and six girls! All fifteen were covered in the same fabric so there would be no arguing over whose is better than whose. I'm a huge fan of uniformity for kids in school at this age!

These cushions were quick and easy to make. I'll share a picture tutorial shortly on how you can make them too, so stay tuned!

Happy Stitching!

  • You are such a wonderful person for doing this for the second graders and I bet your son is so proud of his mother!! You deserve Mother of the Year for this project.

  • Wonderful! You are so sweet to do this for the children. I'm sure they will help plus the children will know that you were thinking of them. You're setting a good example for them to follow.

  • I am sure the kids will love them. This isn't the 1st time that I have wondered how long an adult would last at an office job with a school kid's chair! So kind of you to make one for everyone - that way no one feels left out or feels different than the rest of the class. Cheers! Evelyn
