Handmade Vintage Christmas Ornaments

My grandmother was a pretty crafty lady who lived with my family all the years I was growing up until she died when I was almost out of high school. She was quite an accomplished seamstress, crocheter, cook, and had many other talents as well. She taught me how to crochet when I was quite young, probably 8 or 9 years old.

Gram, as everyone called her, liked to make pretty Christmas ornaments from kits, similar to what we might buy today from Herrschner's or Mary Maxim or your local craft store. Dimensions is the brand that comes to mind when I see her felt and sequin ornaments.

Here are a few of the ornaments that my grandmother made which I was able to remove from my mother's Christmas tree and add to my own. I'm not quite sure my mother knows about this, so let's keep it our little secret, shall we?

Handmade Vintage Christmas Ornament - BellThis bell is made of straight pins, sequins, beads, gold trim and some glue. Its core is a dense styrofoam-type material that holds the pins securely once the glue they were dipped into dries. I love the sparkle it adds to the tree.

Handmade Vintage Christmas Ornament - BirdThis colorful bird has felt pieces sewn onto the main green bird base and is decorated with sequins and beads that are also sewn on. The gold trim is sewn as well and the whole thing is stuffed and about 5 inches from beak tip to tail. It is decorated the same on both sides.

Handmade Vintage Christmas Ornament - DrumI remember Gram made several of these little drum ornaments and over the years a drumstick or two went missing. When I absconded with this patriotic little gem, it was the last one still sporting both drumsticks. I do recall my mother telling me I couldn't take it for that very reason...it still had both drumsticks. Of course I reasoned with her, saying that was precisely why I wanted that one. And here it is hanging on my tree so many years later. I wonder if Mom really thought I would put it back on her tree and take one of the others with only one drumstick.

Handmade Vintage Christmas Ornament - SnowladyAnd this lovely Snowlady has always reminded me of my grandmother. She could tie such beautiful bows with the sashes on our fancy dresses and in our hair. And she used to wear fancy hats too!

So these are some of my vintage ornaments made by my grandmother's hands many many years ago. Every stitch and pin and sequin and loop were perfectly placed. I always hang them on the front of the tree so they will be seen by everyone and if someone asks about them, I can tell them about my grandmother. Sometimes I wonder if the little things I make to decorate my home and Christmas tree will be treasured years from now the way I treasure these ornaments. I guess only time will tell.

Another No Sew Christmas Project -- Easy Felt Snowflake Ornament

Here is another fun, easy and inexpensive no-sew Christmas project that even the most craft-challenged person can make beautifully.

The supplies are very few and can be purchased at your favorite local craft store like Michael's or AC Moore for literally pennies.

All you need to purchase, or find in your stash if you have them, are a piece of white soft felt and a piece of colored eazy felt which is felt that has been stiffened. All other supplies you will probably already have at home.

Easy Felt Snowflake OrnamentInspired by Kristin's recent paper snowflake project over at Craft Leftovers, I got out my paper and scissors and started cutting. I had almost forgotten how fun it is to fold up paper and cut pieces at random from the edges, then unfold a masterpiece. So anyway, that's what you need to do to start. You can follow Kristin's designs, or do what I did and just wing it.

Easy Felt Snowflake OrnamentThen I pinned my paper snowflake onto my piece of white soft felt so it wouldn't move.

Easy Felt Snowflake OrnamentUsing a super fine Sharpie, I traced around the snowflake and all the little cut out sections.

Easy Felt Snowflake OrnamentUsing my very sharpest little scissors, I cut out the shape of the snowflake and all the little openings on the inside until I had a felt snowflake that looked just like my paper snowflake. Then I glued it onto the colored eazy felt using tiny dots of white glue at the tips and evenly spaced throughout the snowflake.

Easy Felt Snowflake OrnamentAfter cutting around the outside of the snowflake leaving a little of the blue around the edge, I threaded some gold metallic sewing thread through one of the points for a hanger.

These would be nice ornaments for your tree or to hang in windows. They would make pretty little gift tags too. You could let your children cut out paper snowflakes in their own unique designs and then use that as a pattern to turn their artwork into a nice little teacher gift or a very thoughtful gift for special friends or grandparents. Another way to use them would be to hang them from a wide ribbon like a banner or bunting over a doorway or mantle. The possibilities are endless. Be creative!

Don't forget to sign up for my Christmas/200th post Celebration Giveaway. It ends a week before Christmas, so you better hurry!

Christmas - 200th Post Celebration Giveaway

This is a busy time of year for everyone what with preparations for Christmas at home or work or school or all of the above. Family get-togethers and special events fill the calendar. In our little family, all five of our birthdays fall between the end of September and the end of January. Our wedding anniversary is exactly a week before Christmas. And of course there are the big occasions to prepare for and celebrate in that same timeframe - Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Years.

Since I started Hooked On Needles to share my love of all things hook and needle related, I have had to plan ahead a little more than usual. So looking ahead on the calendar, I see not only Christmas coming up fast, but also my 200th post which is scheduled to fall the day after our 26th wedding anniversary. I'd say that's a good reason to celebrate with a giveaway, wouldn't you?

I decided to time this giveaway so that the winner will be announced in my 200th post and hopefully the prize package will be received before all the Christmas spirit has been exhausted.

Here's what I have made for you...

Crocheted Angel Christmas OrnamentIt's a crocheted angel Christmas ornament, complete with poofy wings, a halo and a pretty white bow around the middle. This is made with white crochet cotton and an old fashioned clothes pin. You may remember seeing this angel once before when I sent two away as my Christmas ornament swap gift to Nicole in Utah.

Christmas GiveawayAlong with the little crocheted angel, I have put together some other Christmas goodies for the winner which you can seen in the picture. There are some metal gift tags that say "HoHoHo", "Christmas", and "Angel". There is a nice little cut of Christmas fabric, some Christmas color DMC embroidery floss, a roll of Merry Christmas ribbon, a package of 3 dimensional Christmas gift tags, a Mary Engelbreit magnet, and a package of Christmas notecards. In this picture, you can also see some beaded ornaments which I made hanging on the little tree. I might even include a few of those to sparkle up your tree.

So what do YOU have to do to help celebrate Christmas with Hooked On Needles and my 200th post? I know how busy you are right now, so I won't ask too much. Just leave a comment on this post before our 26th wedding anniversary. I've already mentioned when that is. I would love to hear how you met your spouse. I'll tell you how I met mine - ready for this? I met my husband in the ladies room at work. There, I said it. If you are not married, then I would love to hear how you celebrated your first Christmas living away from your childhood home. If you are still living in your childhood home, then how about sharing your most special Christmas memory? See, that's not asking too much, is it?

Make sure you leave your email address in your comment if you post anonymously or if your email is set to no-reply. If I can't email you, I will have to disregard your comment.

Now I have to start thinking about what to make for the Whirl Into Winter Giveaway which will begin on January 1st. That cute little snowflake on my sidebar will guide you to information about this fun post-Christmas event which is being hosted by the same wonderful and generous lady who hosted the Fall Into Fall Giveaway a few months back.

I am still looking for one more sporting person to join my Pay It Forward exchange. If you are interested, just click the button on my sidebar to read all about it.

Happy Stitching!

More Goodies in the Mail -- Christmas Ornament Swap Gifts

George has done it again. He brought me something nice in the mail. Some nice person in Utah sent me a beautiful handmade Christmas ornament as part of the Christmas Ornament Swap I joined a few months ago. Take a look at the twisted wire and pearl snowflake as well as the other nice things she sent to me...

Christmas Ornament Swap GiftsWon't this look beautiful hanging on the Christmas tree? My Secret Santa did such a nice job twisting the wire and making all the loops so even. She said in her little note that the pearls in this ornament were from a vintage necklace. The little gem in the center will catch the lights on the tree and add a bit of sparkle. I just love it. I think I might even leave it hanging in a window for the winter.

Christmas Ornament Swap GiftsBesides the festive snowflake, she also included five handmade cards which I think are just so cute. There is one for Christmas, one for fall, one thank you note, a darling little handbag card complete with handle, and a new baby congratulations card. Aren't they just so creative?

I would love to thank the sender of these gifts personally, but she didn't reveal her identity in her note, so this will have to suffice as my thank you note for now. I hope she sees this and contacts me so I can send her proper thanks.

I've enjoyed this swap and the Stitcher's Angel Swap so much that I would love to participate in others. If you hear of any, please let me know.

Happy Stitching!

Crocheted Angels for Christmas Ornament Swap

A few months ago I ran across Jo-Anne Carter's website of family and craft happenings. She had just posted a call for participants in a Christmas Ornament swap and, having only been in one other swap myself, I decided to sign up. A little time went by and soon I received an email from Jo-Anne telling me who I would get to play Secret Santa to. Of course I can't say who it is, just in case she's reading this, but she'll know soon enough because I will be mailing her a package this week.

Would you like a sneak peek at what I made for her? Go ahead and twist my arm just a little more.....Ok, here you go...

Crocheted AngelsThis Leisure Arts pamphlet is one that I have had for a long time, and it has some very pretty patterns in it. The one that caught my eye and made me put the pamphlet into my shopping cart was the crocheted angels. I just thought they were so sweet. I love crocheting with thread and after looking at the website of my secret swap partner, I thought something like these angels would go very nicely with her holiday decor. I hope I am right about that!

Crocheted AngelsHere are the twins just hanging around my sewing room. The dress is crocheted starting at the neckline, then the bodice and the skirt, then finally the two wings are added on and the halo is stitched separately and glued onto the back of the clothespin head. I love how the clothespin head peeks out the top and the little clothespin legs peek out the skirt.

Crocheted AngelsI added a length of tiny white ribbon around the waist and tied it into a bow at the front just to finish it off. The shell pattern of the skirt and wings with the little scallops in between make a lovely, feminine, lacy design for the heavenly clothespins to wear on the Christmas tree.

So that is what I will be mailing this week to someone out there. Perhaps it will be You! But if not, I do have one more angel all made and just waiting for a home. I'm thinking of doing a Christmas ornament giveaway sometime around Thanksgiving, so make sure to check back often so you don't miss out on it. I just know my third little angel would love to spend Christmas at Your house!
