Hi Mary Grace,
I just wanted pass along a tip I picked up from a craft newsletter years ago. I'm not sure if you know this one. I use this technique when teaching my daughter counted cross stitch. The way learned was start stitching while holding down the "tail" and stitch over it. Well here's an easier starting method. Of course this only works for stitches requiring multiples of 2. Take on thread and fold it half. Thread the loose ends through the needle so you have a loop at the bottom. Come up from the bottom of your fabric leaving the loop underneath. Then go down through the top to make your first half-stitch. To tie it off simply pull the needle and thread through the loop. This make a very nice clean back to your work.
