Hooked on Needles

So much to celebrate this weekend!

This giveaway is now closed! Thanks to all who entered! The lucky winners are Annemarie (no blog) and Tudi. Congratulations!

Hard to believe that this weekend we will be celebrating July 4th here in the USA! Where did the first half of 2010 go? It makes me very happy to look back on the last 6 months and realize that I have spent a reasonable amount of time at my sewing machine, or with knitting needles or crochet hook in hand. The ability to do that is certainly something to celebrate.

Last month, as you may have read, my husband gave us quite a scare with a bout of Group A Strep in his blood and all the associated complications of that illness. After 10 days in the hospital, 5 of those days in critical care, and a good deal of rest here at home, he will be returning to work next week. That is definitely something to celebrate!

I could list countless other blessings which are also worth celebrating, but I have a feeling you know what they are because most likely you are thankful for the same ones. Of course I'm talking about things like a loving husband, a happy marriage (27+ years!), healthy children, good friends, a safe home, and on and on!

A celebration that I completely skipped over last month is the 2nd anniversary of HookedOnNeedles which was on June 3rd! As I recall, we were all under the weather, the school year was winding down, lots of stuff going on and my husband's illness was beginning to brew. Celebrating was the last thing on my mind! So let's celebrate a month late, shall we?

How about a little giveaway or two? Here are the prizes:

Quilted Sewing KitThe first prize will be this little sewing kit that I just made using fabric called Mama's Cottons from Connecting Threads. I love the fabric! It's the same fabric used in this super awesome tote bag I made a while ago.

Quilted Sewing KitIt folds up into a little wallet size package to keep all your sewing notions safe and secure.

Quilted Sewing KitOn the inside are two flat pockets and one 3 dimensional pocket to hold thread spools or other thicker items.

Biscornu - a fluffy pin cushionAnd this biscornu pin cushion will be the second prize. It's a poofy little pin cushion made using two squares of fabric, two yo-yos and two buttons. I made a video showing how to make a biscornu which you can view HERE if you are interested in seeing how two squares can come together to form this shape. It's pretty neat!

Biscornu - a fluffy pin cushionThis is the other side of the same piece.

Biscornu - a fluffy pin cushionOne of the many wonderful swap gifts I have received since starting this website was my very first handmade pin cushion made by May Kristin in Norway which you can see HERE. I had never used a pin cushion before, so I gave it a try. Now I have pin cushions everywhere and I love using them! What a difference to have the pins all standing up waiting for me, instead of digging them out of the box! So I think everyone should have a good handmade pin cushion or three hanging around the sewing room!

So who wants to win a quilted sewing kit or a fabric biscornu pin cushion, perhaps with other goodies included as well? All you have to do is follow these simple directions:
  • leave a comment on this post telling everyone what you hope to accomplish this summer in the way of sewing, crocheting, knitting, or any other kind of handwork, if any, or what your biggest adventure for this summer is likely to be.
  • make certain I can email you by including your email address in your comment, otherwise your entry won't count. If you don't get a reply from me within a day or two after entering, that means I could not email you!
  • feel free to share this giveaway with friends, but you don't have to. I love it when a regular reader wins my giveaways!
  • that's it! One entry per person!
I'll leave this giveaway open for one week, so sometime on Friday, July 9th, I'll close comments and announce the winners. So if you can still comment, that means the giveaway is still open!

Thanks so much to all my regular readers and all those who pop in now and then to see what I'm up to. I've met so many wonderfully generous and creative people over the past two years and have learned so much from each one of you. I have to say, this blogging thing is pretty cool and I love it!

Happy Stitching!

  • Mary Grace!
congrats on 2 years- that's a feat!! My goal for being crafty this summer is just that- finding down time and pulling out my sewing machine for a couple hours and whipping something up- like aprons, or clothespin bags. those are great b/c in terms of projects you can do it in one sitting, so to speak. My big adventure is doing well with my new Pampered Chef business... I'm willing to travel *hint, hint*.. btw I will be in ME this coming week.

  • Well, I'll be the first to say congratulations on 2 years, and on you all feeling better! Don't I know how illness can waylay a person's plans. I'm hoping to bring three quilts to the finish line this summer, as well as completing a patriotic charity quilt. Happy sewing!

  • Mary, I think we've realized before that the two of us started blogging within days of each other and it was only a couple months later that we "crossed paths". Blogging really is pretty cool and like you, I love it. I would love to win one of your lovely gifts. :-) I know that you have won a couple of my giveaways so I am hoping for good luck on this one. Perhaps Pinky could cross his arms and legs for me and that would give me the extra luck I need. ;-) My goal for the summer is just to get through July which is so busy with family reunions and quilt retreats and programs. Then in August I have nothing going on and I hope to keep the time all to myself!

  • Congrats on 2 wonderful years. Your website gave me a lot of help when I started doing redwork again..

Please don't add me to the drawing though...because I have a wonderful embroidery carry case that a dear friend made me..

  • Congratulations on your 2nd Blogiversary!!
We're in the middle of winter here and it's a cold, blustery day, just right for staying indoors and sewing.
First and foremost, I would really love to finish the quilting on my Wonky Houses Wall Hanging today!
Then get stuck into joining the blocks for my log cabin king size quilt and keep up with my One Flower Wednesdays.
    Happy Summer/Winter Stitching :o)

  • Congrats on two years - love your blog and all your helpful, inspiring ideas and patterns. I hope to finish a full size afghan I am making for my grandson. I am also working on some totes, crochet potholders and dishcloths and hopefully will soon start some Christmas projects. Christmas rolls around all too fast for me!

  • since it is so hot where I live, I spend most of my summer indoors working on my projects. I finished quilting my 6th lap quilt for a nursing home tonight, I just have to put on the bindings. I then will work on my mother in laws star quilt that I am making for her birthday, just need to quilt it. I am also making the cutest little fabric strawberry sachets for my grand daughters Bat Mitzvah in Sept.

  • Mary Grace, I am planning on finishing all the WIP. I always promise myself that another project will not be started until the present one is finished (never can live up to that promise!).

  • Right now I'm working on an afghan that has been in the works for four years. I have many UFO's to finish...quilts, pillow cases, more quilts, skorts for the granddaughters....the list goes on and on. In between all of that I will be camping for ten days.

  • I'm glad your husband has recovered. I like the sewing kit but LOVE the pincushion! I am hoping to get finished with several small projects that a friend and I are designing in hopes of submitting a book proposal by the end of the summer....WHEW...a LOT of work involved in this!!!

  • Congratulations on your 2 year anniversary - that's a lot of fun and sharing! Can you even imagine more than a day or two without reading your favorite blogs, or posting to your own? Blogs and tutorials are probably two of the BEST things to come from the "interwebs" - the amount of sharing and inspiration is almost unbelievable!

This summer I'm working on getting some Christmas gifts done and wrapped - I ran into problems last Christmas and got way off track, so I want to do better this year, lol. I recently sent a June 2010 birthday gift along with her 2009 Christmas gift - talk about embarrassing!
