Clever Thread Spool Holder

You've seen some of my mother's crochet handiwork here at Hooked On Needles, and I have shown you some of my sister's quilting. I have another sister who is also quite a hand quilter, but I don't have any pictures of her work, and another sister who does gorgeous smocking. And then I also have another sister who is a master at hand embroidery and has done some stunning pieces. But I also have yet another sister who is quite an accomplished seamstress. She makes lots of clothing for her children, and teaches them to make their own, and she also makes vestments for Catholic priests to wear during the celebration of Holy Mass and the other sacraments. I really should see if I can get some pictures of some of her work to show you. It is fabulous.

But today I just wanted to share with you her version of a holder for her spools of thread. You've seen mine in the pictures I shared of my last great clean-up quite a while ago. It holds maybe 40 or 50 spools with a little tray at the bottom for my bobbin box and a dowel I added to it where I put my ribbon. Well, take a look at what my sister made for her spools of thread...

Thread Spool Holder - Peg board designIt's a piece of peg board from the hardware store which she embellished a bit by laying a piece of inexpensive lace fabric over it and spray painting through the lace. What a clever way to get a nice design onto an ugly piece of peg board! Then she framed it and hung it on the wall. She will cut short pieces of a wooden dowel to fit into the holes of the peg board, and glue them in. This board will hold lots more than her current little thread holder that you can see at the bottom of the picture. And it will get all her spools off of her workspace and out of the way.

She also plans to use part of the board for other little supplies that have no home. There are lots of different hanging devices made to be used on peg board, and they are all available at your local hardware store which is a great resource when looking for ways to organize your stuff.

So there's a great organizing idea for you to keep in mind if you find you have an unruly collection of thread and other little odd things.

Now let's see, did I forget to mention anyone in my family? Yes, I did! Maybe another time!

Happy Stitching!

  • Your sister's idea is great - and would be easy to make - that appeals to me! I have three sisters but you out shine me - what a family of talented girls!! Isn't there a brother hiding somewhere?? I have one and he was the baby so was always spoiled by his four sisters.
